FRSC to prosecute reckless drivers as five operatives killed on duty
The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, has disclosed how reckless driving led to the tragic deaths of five of its personnel while carrying out official duties in different parts of the country.
According to the Corps, its operatives were killed in separate incidents across Ekiti, Ogun, Taraba, Plateau, and Enugu States within the month of September.
The Corps Marshal, Malam Shehu Mohammed, has directed the immediate prosecution of the motorists involved in the deadly crashes. His directive, he explained, is aimed at ensuring justice for the fallen officers and sending a strong warning to other motorists whose recklessness puts lives at risk.
This was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Corps Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide, on behalf of the Corps Marshal.
Detailing the incidents, FRSC said the losses occurred at the Ekiti Sector Command on September 6, the Ogun Sector Command on September 8, the Taraba Sector Command on September 15, the Jos By-Pass Unit Command on September 19, and the Obollo Afor Unit Command on September 24.
“These deaths are not mere numbers. They represent human lives; fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, and breadwinners, cut short while serving the nation and working to make Nigerian roads safer,” Mohammed stated.
He expressed worry over the rising dangers faced by FRSC officers in the line of duty, noting that beyond speeding vehicles, operatives were increasingly exposed to kidnapping, violent assaults, and targeted attacks.
The Corps Marshal stressed that the organisation would no longer condone acts of recklessness that jeopardise the safety of its personnel, warning that offenders would be made to face the full weight of the law.
