The actions of the Mayor, Umuahia North LGA are counterproductive to the high-flying performance of Abia State Executive Governor, Dr Alex Otti.
The recent visit of Labour Party State Working Committee to Umuahia North LGA was marred by chaos.
Party supporters decried the Local Government’s subpar performance, prompting the state chairman to repeatedly express his dismay over the apparent leadership vacuum, which was reflected in the poor attendance. The event was characterized by a lack of organization, with leaders speaking over each other. The high table was suddenly vacated by senior officials without explanation, leaving junior party members stranded in the rain and cold.
As one moves around the canopies, it becomes apparent that the members of the ruling party are simply ‘suffering and smiling’. Amidst the murmurs, one hears phrases like ‘the former Mayor left 300 million naira for you, yet there is nothing to show for it in the communities, apart from painting office zinc and walls’ and the small canteen at the gate, then another deteriorated ‘Go and see the mansion he’s raising for himself with public funds on Okonjo Iweala road, while he’s keeping our eyes busy with painting office blocks that had been built years back’. We verified much of what we heard at the council compound; reports of auctioning council cars without clearance from Councillors, who constitute the legislative arm, and spending funds without approval from the Council.
Our team quickly responded to the information by initiating an investigation to confirm the allegations and conducting a thorough search of the village. Although we were initially unable to locate the house based on the provided description, we eventually found it on a later day using an alternative route from Mgbaja Ossah to Isingwu. The residence, situated just two buildings after the hilly bridge, is allegedly the site where the individual in question is misusing public funds to construct a house. It is worth noting that he has been vocal in the media and physically aggressive, referring to us as opposition members. Instead of emulating the Governor’s initiatives for state development, he seems to prioritize his personal interests.
Allegations have surfaced that the LGA’s funds are being diverted for unauthorized purposes, including lodging major hotels in Port Harcourt. The actual Mr. Raturatu’s accomplishments within his tenure are for personal gain but unfortunately he is telling the people that there is no funds to carry out projects to the Local government council
