WCQ: He doesn’t score against big teams – Burley rubbishes Ronaldo’s brace against Armenia

Former Chelsea midfielder, Craig Burley, has said that Cristiano Ronaldo’s double strikes in Portugal World Cup qualifier against Armenia on Saturday does not mean anything.

He said this while maintaining his stance that coach Roberto Martinez should drop the 40-year-old forward from the national team.

The Al Nassr captain netted twice in Portugal 5-0 win over their host at the Vazgen Sargsyan Republican Stadium on Saturday evening.

Ronaldo’s Al Nassr teammate, Joao Felix and Joao Cancelo were the other scorers in the Group F game.

Speaking on ESPN FC, Burley was reminded about his earlier comment when he urged Martinez to move the veteran attacker out from the national team.

Burley said that no doubt the Portugal international scores a lot of goals but doubted his ability to show up in big games during the Euros and the World Cup

According to him, the Nations League recently won by Portugal and Ronaldo is just another form of friendly games and “Is not really a big deal.”

For Burley, Ronaldo scoring a lot of goals against countries like Armenia and Lichtenstein is not a big deal.

“The question remains when he’s been at the top level against the bigger teams in the European Championships, in the World Cups he’s either been anonymous or he’s been dragged off,” he said

Ronaldo is now 60 goals away from hitting 1000 career goals. He has netted 140 goals from 222 games for his country.
